The Bush campaign put supportive Texas Democrats out on the trail on its behalf to demonstrate his bipartisan appeal. Texas Democrats joined in debate spin, on the "Barnstorm for Reform" tour and in "Gore Detector" efforts.

Among the most active were:

Judge John Hill (Ret.) [served 11 years in state government and was the first person in Texas history to serve as Secretary of State, Attorney General, and Chief Justice].

In the absence of a competitive campaign in Texas, the state became an exporter of expertise on the Bush record. Democratic Party Chair Molly Beth Malcolm traveled extensively during the fall campaign. A number of "Texas Truth Squads" sallied forth.

State Rep. Lon Burnam (D-Fort Worth) participated in quite a few of these truth squads, starting with the first one at the Republican Convention in Philadelphia. Burnam compared his role to that of a Paul Revere. His rallying cry was, "We're here to warn America the Bushes are coming." "I know how bad he is," Burnam said later. Among the states he visited were Michigan (twice--on Aug. 5 in East Lansing opposite Bush's "Change the Tone" whistlestop tour and on Oct. 21 in Southfield), Wisconsin (three stops in Western Wisconsin), Iowa, Maine (on Oct. 20 countering Bush's rally in Bangor) and Washington (on the final weekend, countering former President Bush in Spokane and making an appearance in the Yakima Valley and later hitting Vancouver and Seattle). At one point when he was traveling in eastern Iowa with two more stops to go, the DNC called and said "Catch this plane," sending him on his way to Bangor, Maine. Burnam observed that the "Texas Truth Squad" provided "a different twist" but that it was "hard to get the media to pay attention to the issues."

Gore carried 16 counties in the southern tip of the state, 4 counties in the western part (El Paso, Culberson, Presidio and Reeves) and 4 counties scattered in the eastern part (Jefferson County which includes Beaumont and Port Arthur, as well as Morris, Newton and Robertson counties).

Ralph Nader visited Texas on Oct. 18-19. On Oct. 18 he held a rally followed by a press conference at Richland College in Dallas; he then proceeded to Austin where he did fundraiser at Thread Gills world headquarters and a press conference and a rally with Jim Hightower at Tony Burger Center. On Oct. 19 he held a press conference in San Antonio and a rally at San Antonio College; he then flew to Houston where he did a fundraiser at the Art Car Museum ($100/person) and a press conference and speech at the University of Houston.

Harry Browne visited Texas on Aug. 16-18 during some very hot weather. Arriving in Houston on Aug. 16 he did media interviews during the day and held an evening event at his hotel. On Aug. 17 in Austin he did media interviews and held an evening event at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel (over 200 people attended, and over $15,000 was raised to support Browne and local candidates). On Aug. 18 in Dallas ("It's apparently about 106 degrees," he wrote in his Campaign Journal) he again did media interviews during the day and held an evening event.
