P2000, launched in May 1998, provides a framework to help you, the interested citizen, understand and analyze the 2000 presidential campaign.  Material is organized by Chronology, Key Players, and Selected Themes as well as in 50 State pages.  The journey to the White House is a lengthy and costly one.  For 2000 it followed familiar ground but also took some unusual turns.  Starting with early trips to Iowa and New Hampshire, organization building, and fundraising by more than a dozen hopefuls, the path continued through the gamut of primaries, national conventions, high-stakes debates, and the final push to Election Day.  Then it kept going for another 36 days as Florida hung in the balance.  On January 20th, 2001, George W. Bush put his hand on the Bible and swore the oath of office, thereby becoming the 43rd president of the United States.  One legacy of the 2000 campaign, in addition to the policies implemented by the Bush administration, will be election reform; Congress, state legislatures and various groups are discussing proposals to improve the voting process.
